Social Welfare Law Advisers

Three positions available - two full time (36.25 hours per week) and one part time (18.5 hours per week)

Salary – £20,000 - £23,110 depending on experience (pro rata for part time)

Responsible to the Contracts Co-ordinator

Location: Morecambe

Fixed term for 12 months

We are looking for case workers to provide high quality advice in the main areas of law - welfare benefits, housing, employment and debt, to our clients.

Role description 

  • You’ll provide generalist case work with a focus on welfare benefits, employment, housing and debt to our clients, calculating entitlements, doing debt assessments, negotiating with the DWP, drafting letters, emails and over the phone, from initial enquiries up to complex case work

  • You’ll ensure that clients’ incomes are maximised, that they are supported and informed, and that they are able to apply for benefits they are eligible for.

  • You’ll challenge errors, discrimination, delays and errors, representing clients to the appropriate statutory bodies, tribunals and courts. You’ll meet clients in the office, in the community and on home visits, as required.

  • You’ll maintain an expert level of current knowledge and share this when required with colleagues and volunteers including training and presentations.

  • We will provide full training, and are open to those who have not done this role before if you have recently left education or you are looking for a career change.

  • You’ll feed into our Research & campaigns work by providing evidence forms, data, statistics and reports to our Chief Executive and Board when required.

  • You’ll keep outstanding case notes and records, ensuring that Citizens Advice policies and procedures are always followed

Person specification

  • You might be an experienced adviser, or new to advice work - we are happy to provide full training to someone who wants to learn advice work

  • You’ll have excellent communication skills both with clients and in writing, case recording, negotiating and corresponding

  • You’ll be organised, keeping accurate records, good timekeeping and open communication with colleagues

  • You’ll meet our quality standards and funder targets, making the best use of IT and you’ll receive feedback objectively, sensitively and constructively

  • You’ll be happy working in a diverse team, supporting colleagues and clients alike, and you’ll understand and agree with the aims and principles of our Charity.

Specialist Debt Caseworker (MaPS service)

Hours – full time, 36.25 hours per week

Salary - £20,000 - £23,110 pro rata depending on experience and training

Responsible to the Contracts Co-ordinator

Location: Morecambe

This role is pending continuation of funding but is for at least ten months

 We are looking for a Debt Caseworker to join our team to help us continue delivering the MaPS (Money and Pensions Service) advice under the contract we hold with the Government. 

Role description

·  You’ll deliver a high quality, specialist advice service to clients who need assistance with debt and income maximisation, benefit advice and financial capability help or budgeting assistance.

·  You’ll work with our team to provide in depth support and guidance to develop the skills and knowledge of colleagues both paid and volunteers.

·  You’ll be responsible for ensuring that your advice is of a high quality with excellent client outcomes, and that advice is delivered both face to face and remotely, to suit clients who will also need additional support on occasion to follow the advice we give them.

·  You will provide a high standard of casework covering all types of debt, acting for clients where necessary and ensuring that they are able to maximise their incomes. You’ll use appropriate assessment tools to make accurate and relevant referrals to others where appropriate.

·  You’ll keep up to date with case law, and help clients with their cases up to tribunal and court level, attending with clients where necessary. You’ll make home and community visits where required.

·  You’ll support our research and campaigns work by drawing attention to cases  that are unfair, discriminatory or damaging to clients and working with our Director of Service Development to provide evidence forms.

·  You’ll keep your continuing professional development up to date with ongoing learning and you’ll be enthusiastic about making recommendations about how we can improve and develop our services.

Person specification

·  You’ll have specialist knowledge in debt advice with the ability to provide formal representation to statutory bodies and courts. If not, you'll be willing to undergo full training from Citizens Advice.

·  You’ll have good oral and written communication and case recording skills. 

·  You’ll be supportive with team members, helping them to improve their knowledge and understanding of your work, and giving volunteers and staff the chance to develop by facilitating shadowing and sharing case studies.

·  You’ll understand and embrace working in a diverse team and helping to facilitate volunteers and their support of our service. 

·  You’ll have an understanding and interest in Citizens Advice, our aims and principles and the social and political issues that affect our clients and our work.
